madeline bell at themes international music

Madeline Bell, Alan Parker c.s. in 1976, for Parker's Themes International library label … just reissued on (Dutton) Vocalion (CDSML 8473, 2011). The sleeve's nicked off Millie Jackson's "It Hurts So Good" (Spring 1973), actually.

belgium's dragon & insects

Dragon, from Belgium, released their untitled debut in 1976. It's no masterpiece, but this spaceyish track is rather nice. The lp has recently been reprinted by Golden Pavillion (GP1003LP, 2010-05-30), who've also released the band's so-so 1977 demo recordings as "Kalahen" (GP1009LP, 2011-03-01).

mah na mah na dat bip bippadotta

Piero Umiliani's classic track (1968), as made famous by David Mahna MacKay (in 1969 - more on him in the next post), Sesame Street (1969), Sesamstraße (?) and, last but not least, the Muppets (e.g. 1976) … Apparently, Jim Henson c.s. have recorded several versions, most of them by the character Bip Bippadotta ... but Sandra Bullock did her part too - see http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Mahna_Mahna_(song) for more on all that!

seven oft sampled minutes

Wholedarnfamily

Most of us first got to know this August Moon & Tyrone Thomas track via EPMD's "It's my thing" in 1988, I guess. More recently the original 1976 lp on Soul International has been reprinted (on coloured vinyl) via Amherst (cat. no. AMH 5511, 2009, still available).
