tino contreras' mexican jazz

Jazzman Gerald has just compiled the best of Tino Contreras on "El Jazz Mexicano De" (JMAN 043 cd / 2lp, 2011-12) … and he's entered the hip record bag business too … Contreras' “Orbita” (taken from the rare and virtually untraceable private press record “Quinto Sol, Musica Infinita”) required specially modified harmonic harps developed by Julian Carrillo … Top reissue for the non religious as well!

spirogyra's electric eden

While Jeanette Leech was writing her fab folk book … Rob Young was working on another excellent volume - not just about folk: "Electric Eden - unearthing Britain's visionary music" (Faber && Faber 2010-08-05, ISBN 9780571237524). I haven't finished reading it yet but it's a real treasure trove of information, making it an impossible task to list the acts he brings into view. (Kevin Ayers, David Bowie, Joe Boyd, Anne Briggs, Vashti Bunyan, Shirley Collins, Donovan, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, Bill Fay, Forest, Fotheringay, Roy Harper, (Mike) Heron, the Incredible String Band, Bert Jansch, Kaleidoscope [UK], John Martyn, Mellow Candle, Mighty Baby, Mr Fox, Parchment, Pentangle, Pink Floyd, John Renbourn, Soft Machine, Steeleye Span, Traffic, Trees  ànd Talk Talk have been dealt with, of course. Surprisingly, Michael Chapman, Fresh Maggots, Mushroom and Tractor hardly get a mention.) On pages 512 & 513, for instance, Mr. Young describes the (three album) legacy of UK folk act Spirogyra (mainly Martin Cockerham & Barbara Gaskin) … Don't confuse them with the US fusion jazzers Spyro Gyra who debuted in 1978!

mtumphrends

Soulmusic.com Records (as distributed by Cherry Red) aren't just releasing expanded editions of albums by George Duke or Harvey Mason - see earlier posts - but also manufacture reissues of fine funky stuff by Barbara Ann aka Bobbi Humphrey, Loose Ends, Mtume, Roy Ayers and many more … "New Face Deli" (1986, here without the tedious intro) features William "Bootsy" Collins (who cowrote the song with James Mtume) while "Home-made jam" (1978) strongly reminds of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "A real mother for ya", no?

worrell's woo power

The legendary Bernie Worrell of Parliament, Funkadelic ànd Talking Heads fame! Co-produced by George Clinton and featuring Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Gary Shider, Eddie Hazel, the Brides and many more! Well, his first solo album "All The Woo In The World" (Arista 1978, now on cd via Get on Down, GET-51277, 2011) has its ups ànd downs. But it's not a funk masterpiece from A to Z (via P), sadly. Still, that long lp version of "Insurance man for the funk" … yippie yày!

expanded dukey stick

Can't wait for those expanded Soulmusic.com editions of George Duke's "Don't Let Go" (1978) and "Reach For It" (1977)! For the sources of the tracks below, see http://soulmusic.com/georgeduke.html … and see also http://www.jazzecho.de/musik/musikproduktdetail/product/102644/my-soul-the-complete-mps-fusion-recordings/ + http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/powered-by-kontakt/george-duke-soul-treasures/ for more of his genius!

bennie maupin twofer

Two albums by jazz legend Bennie Maupin have just been reissued by (Dutton) Vocalion … "Slow Traffic To The Right" dates from 1977, "Moonscapes" from 1978. Herbie Hancock is nowhere to be seen or heard on these - he's being replaced by Patrice Rushen - but a lot of Maupin's Headhunters bandmates appear …

indoor life

Indoor Life … from Frisco … as underrated as any … and in dire need of reappraisal and a reissue programme ;-) By way of consolation, "Voodoo" can be found on "A Man & A Machine III" (2011-09).

koen de bruyne's kluis

Music of its age and time, by Koen De Bruyne. "Pathetic dreams" is off his debut lp "Here Comes The Crazy Man!" (Vogue 1974); era vocals by Patricia Maesen, drums by Jean-Pierre Onraedt. (A year later, this trio would feature on Janko Nilovic's Mad Unity lp, also on Vogue Belgique.) As a follow up, shortly before his (untimely) death in 1977, De Bruyne recorded the soundtrack for Jan Gruyaert's film "In kluis" (Hans Kusters Music 1978, reissued 2007), of which the first three tracks below were taken. De Bruyne (brother of Kris) also participated in the recording of "Laat me nu toch niet alleen" by Johan Verminnen (1974), which features a (Belgian) classic moog solo by Telex' Dan Lacksman.

einzelgaenger moroder

Great to learn that Giorgio (Hansjörg) Moroder will be awarded for his soundtrack work at the next Ghent film festival; Herr Moroder will receive the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award 2011 on 2011-10-22. The night before, there will be a Moroder party at the Vooruit (organised by Goodlife & avenue L). Let's hope der Moroder will come and perform "Chase" in a similar way as he did on German (ARD) tv in 1979:
