italo funk experience

Media_httpwwwimcdborg_bzlqv

A Goblink Floyd ripoff or other Oldfieldesque exorcism + a few other gems off the "(Big Bang Present) Italian Funk Experience (Synth Funk, Italo-Exploitation & Espresso-Jazz From Italy 1969-1980)" v/a cd. Mostly filled with Italian library, it's not as exquisite as the French volume, sadly. Also just out in Nascente's half-a-midprice "Funk Experience" series: "(DJ Andy Smith & Keith Lawrence Present) Jamaican Funk Experience (Rude-Boy Riddims, Skanking Horns & Boss Reggae)" - similarly great but not grandiose.

indoor life

Indoor Life … from Frisco … as underrated as any … and in dire need of reappraisal and a reissue programme ;-) By way of consolation, "Voodoo" can be found on "A Man & A Machine III" (2011-09).

carol with snowy red and a machine or two

Absolutely wanted to play Carol's "Breakdown" for ya - a track I'd already mentioned in my Snowy Red post, as he's backing her on this one. The track is also on the very excellent "A Man & A Machine III" v/a 2cd. The tracks by the Cabs, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and Drinking Electricity are presented here in the compilers' original sequence, just to show how well Stéphane Ritzenthaler and Philippe Pierre-Adolphe can create a musical flow, apart from having impeccable taste in eighties wave and avantgarde … Do check their "A Man & A Machine" series, I urge thee!

a man and a machine

Amaam3

Wonderful tracks off my fave comp of the year: the "A Man & A Machine III" v/a 2cd (le Son du Maquis cat no. 214, rel. 2011-09-08). I could have picked any track, really, as the third volume is the best yet in the series. (Apparently it's won a Qwartz award for best electronics compilations. Don't think Qwartz or Maquis will win prizes for keeping their sites up to date, though.)

Before they scored hits in their own name, Ashford & Simpson were songwriters, mostly, teaming up with Joshie Jo Armstead for instance … Here's an A&S penned song from 1967 plus the original version of "Let's go get stoned" - as released in 1965 by the Coasters, who're most famous for working with Mike Stoller & Jerry Leiber (also deceased) … I.M. More Sauveur Mallia library smurfivity via "Spatial Disco 2" on Electunes … 10 track lp, 22 track cd, both utterly smurf!

danza meccanica

Whilst we wait for volume 2, here's two tracks off 2010's "Danza Meccanica Italian Synth Wave 1982-1987" v/a cd on Mannequin (MNQ 005) / In the Night Time (NT 012). Standout track "Behind the door" by Victrola is a home studio recording from 1985, previously unreleased until it became a bonus track on the cd edition, which features three tracks not on the 2lp version.

serge gainsbox

Here's a few of the exclusive or rare tracks on the "Gainsbourg" 20cd box (aka "L'intégrale 20e Anniversaire") … It's a fine offering but on the other hand, this is the umpteenth expensive recompilation of Serge G's œuvre and the inédits account for merely one cd's worth … And the OpenDisc content is once again insultingly disappointing - as it always is. Soit, IM SG (1928-04-02 > 1991-03-02).

neil bogart's lot

And loads more vids on / by Casablanca artists here … as for background stories, check "And party every day - the inside story of Casablanca Records" (Backbeat 2009, ISBN 9780879309824) by Larry Harris with Curt Gooch and Jeff Suhs … "the most dirt-filled music book since Mötley Crüe’s "The Dirt" […] always entertaining and frequently jaw-dropping, from Harris’ description of acting as runner for an enormous amount of cocaine for […] and several female hotel guests […] to tales of calling his own positions on the Billboard charts" (dixit the AV Club's Michaelangelo Matos). Or is it? "Those expecting salacious stories à la Hit Men by Fredric Dannen will be disappointed (Harris challenges this version of events)" dixit DJ History. Still, can't wait to read the book myself!
