camberwell now!

Media_httpwwwlocussol_iskib

After the legendary This Heat came Camberwell Nowagain featuring Charles Hayward, accompanied by Trefor Goronwy & Stephen Rickard and, in 1986, Maria Lamburn. Their complete works can be found on one fine cd (DUP0022) via ReR Megacorp or Locus Solus aka Recommended Japan: "All's Well (The Complete LP, EPs Collection: Meridian, The Ghost Trade, Greenfingers)". Recorded 1982-1986, remastered 2006. Two tracks are missing, though: "Trade winds" and "For those in peril on the sea". But we get a remake of "Splash", viz. "Resplash" (off Sub Rosa's "Myths 1 - Instructions For Survival" v/a compilation), and "Daddy needs a throne" off the "Ritual Magnetic North" v/a K7 tape on Touch.

dropped in unconditionally

Yes, the Big Lebowski classic … bùt do note: the original version is by Jerry Lee Lewis, off his "Soul My Way" lp (1967)! Mickey Newbury didn't release his own version of his song (a Jimi Hendrix favourite) until his 1968 debut "Harlequin Melodies". The First Edition's version (featuring Kenny Rogers) is from the same year. Bettye LaVette's wonderful cover version (1969) of "Just dropped in (to see what condition my condition was in)" can be found on Trikont's first "Dirty Laundry - The Soul Of Black Country" (US-0333, 2000) v/a comp … whilst Sharon Jones' version (with the Dap Kings) dates dates from 2002 or 2004. Carcass frontman Jeff Walker's cuntry metal version dates from 2006, Supergrass' "Condition" is off 1995's "Alright / Time" single, and die Haut's is off 1988's "Headless Body In Topless Bar" lp and features Nick Cave. Got that?

rip bert jansch

I.M. guitar master Bert Jansch (1943-11-03 > 2011-10-05). Didn't die of an overdose. Incidentally, "Blues run the game" (also covered by Nick Drake) was originally written & recorded by Jackson C. Frank.

a day in the life

Brian Auger on French tv in 1968, and Les DeMerle in the same year, off his "Spectrum" lp (just reissued on Get On Down). Wonder who was the first to see a jazz adaptation in this song. And to boot: two more Beatles covers, from France, off 2006's "La France Et Les Beatles Vol. 2" v/a cd on Magic (who have an impractical site). rip jerry leiber

Almost forgot to publish this after I'd announced that I'd post some more on Leiber & Stoller & Spark records, but now with the sad news of Mr Leiber's parting ... here's a reminder of some of Leiber & Stoller's brilliant producing & songwriting skills, and of that exquisite autobiography by Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller with David Ritz: "Hound dog - the Leiber & Stoller autobiography" (Simon & Schuster 2009-06, ISBN 9781416559382). At the publisher's site, you can browse the book ... may I suggest reading Randy Poe's appendix, where he argues (convincingly) that L&S practically invented rock 'n' roll? (And keep an eye out for more on their magic partnership - it's like Tex Avery making music - with the Coasters in a future post.)

singular double vision

A Love cover from 1996-10, off "Forever Changes" (Elektra 1967). After "Painter man" (Farian, Farian) by Boney M (1978, originally by the Creation, 1966), surely thé most ludicrous 'dance' interpretation of a sixties gem. Curious for that 1969 live version by Episode Six too, actually ... Hey and if you're into this kind of Eurotranshe, rather than into 'straight' covers such as Calexico's, do check out "Graviteen dream" by Orange Blue as well ... Trrrrr!!
