el! ef! oh!

What with Warp rereleasing 1991's "Frequencies" by LFO, here's some LFO rarities …The studio tracks all date from 1991, the live tracks were recorded 1992-01-18 @ "la Rave de la grande Arche - La défense - Paris" which also featured Laurent Garnier, Eric Rug and Jérôme Pacman. Co-organisers Libération & Fnac Music later launched "Live In Paris 18.1.1992 (La Grande Arche De La Défense)", a six track mcd "hors commerce" in a rouge & noir sleeve by the Designers' Republic™. Sadly, the boundary between tracks 4 & 5 wasn't mastered properly on that mcd, with the intro of "LFO" starting at the end of "Sam & Dave". The 5'43" version below does feature the correct intro, though, as reassembled from the original aiff files. Hey and do check Luke Vibert's 2009 version of "LFO" as well, won't you?

fly low creature with the atom brain

Whilst we eagerly await the new Creature with the Atom Brain album (check "The birds fly low" for a fine teaser), let's revisit 2009's all too underrated nay mighty "Transylvania" (MR303 on Munich) for "Spinnin' the black hole" - like a perfect cross between Midlake and Sun Dial - or "Darker than a dungeon" with Koen Kohlbacher of Birds that Change Colour - or "Lonely light" with Mark Lanegan & Chris Goss - or "The color of sundown" or "Something is wrong"

Most of us first got to know this August Moon & Tyrone Thomas track via EPMD's "It's my thing" in 1988, I guess. More recently the original 1976 lp on Soul International has been reprinted (on coloured vinyl) via Amherst (cat. no. AMH 5511, 2009, still available). Before they scored hits in their own name, Ashford & Simpson were songwriters, mostly, teaming up with Joshie Jo Armstead for instance … Here's an A&S penned song from 1967 plus the original version of "Let's go get stoned" - as released in 1965 by the Coasters, who're most famous for working with Mike Stoller & Jerry Leiber (also deceased) … I.M. Almost forgot to publish this after I'd announced that I'd post some more on Leiber & Stoller & Spark records, but now with the sad news of Mr Leiber's parting ... here's a reminder of some of Leiber & Stoller's brilliant producing & songwriting skills, and of that exquisite autobiography by Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller with David Ritz: "Hound dog - the Leiber & Stoller autobiography" (Simon & Schuster 2009-06, ISBN 9781416559382). At the publisher's site, you can browse the book ... may I suggest reading Randy Poe's appendix, where he argues (convincingly) that L&S practically invented rock 'n' roll? (And keep an eye out for more on their magic partnership - it's like Tex Avery making music - with the Coasters in a future post.)
