Russell Mills recorded this James Joyce poem (from 1907's "Chamber Music", untitled poem V) with top lass Clodagh Simonds of Mellow Candle and of Fovea Hex, for his album "Undark Two: Pearl + Umbra" (1999). Syd Barrett had already recorded it somewhere in 1968-1969, for his brilliantly titled debut "The Madcap Laughs" (Harvest 1970), an lp which saw members of Soft Machine, Humble Pie and Jokers Wild contribute. More on Russell Mills here + in a future post …

frieda von ipanema sufferin' from tyfus contour

Jobim & Moraes' "Garota de Ipanema" in a version by Mrs. Miller (1966) by way of tribute to Dennis Tyfus' "Gargles from Ipanema" installation, which you can experience 'neath the platforms of Mechelen's Nekkerspoel train station until 2011-10-30 as part of the Contour 2011 5th Biennial of Moving Image. Whether you know Frieda or not, I urge you to go and see the installation! You can hear a taster of Vom Grill & Remörk's one hour soundtrack here, as two excerpts have been released on an Ültra Eczema 10" (cat. no. UE105). The Anthony Kiendl curated Contour will also bring Lee Ranaldo & Leah Singer to Malines on 2011-09-30, while Chicks on Speed, the late Brion Gysin and Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven / Club Moral are contributing art too. Addendum: a sad ending / premature removal of the installation ...

im mick karn (continued)

In addition to my previous post on Japan's jazzy bass master Mick Karn …here's a wonderful interview about his talents in sculpture as well as music. Do check the above fragment (from 1983) from 2'47" onwards! Or this 1984 interview in two parts ànd this 1980-12 Old Grey Whistle Test performance below (break between songs at 6'17")! Why, Mr Karn even shone in this 1982-03 collabaration with Angie Bowie (who does have a nice smile).

barney bubbles' alice

"A music video made using rare '60s footage from an Alice in Wonderland inspired film project collaboration by Michel Parry, Barney Bubbles and a bunch of their friends. Alice is played by Rosemary Chester. The footage was originally recorded with the intention of making a whole film inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The film was never completed and the original footage was only recently saved and transferred to dvd by Michel Parry who showed it to his daughter Cassie (Bear). Shortly after, Harry of Bear Driver edited the original footage to fit the song and the film (that has never previously been released in any form) was given new life. Both Michel Parry and Barney Bubbles appear in this footage. The locations are still recognisable as Soho square and Crystal Palace Park, where the monsters are!"

ivor shrigley & david cutler

David Shrigley - currently on expo in BelgiuM - has drawn clips for his fellow Scotsman Ivor Cutler, who's influenced him immensely. (These two tracks are off the Oblique Musical Philosopher's lp "Ludo" as produced by Sir Martin - you can find a third track here.) Bonus: more Cutler stuff, three wee Tomlab links and:
