lionel at a loss for cash?

Hellolionel

Picture by unknown artist (or?), badass music by the early Commodores, featuring Lionel Richie, recorded in 1969 for Atlantic (before they were signed to MoWest / Motown) … "Keep on dancing" is originally by Alvin Cash (with the Scott Brothers' orchestra), actually, from 1968. goin' crazy over booker t

Booker T is back! And to prove that Mr. Jones has always excelled at cover versions, here's the best ever version of Bobbie Gentry's 1967 classic "Ode to Billie Joe" … released by Booker T and the MG's in 1968. Do listen to it over and over again to analyse the cover version's arrangement, savour the track's ingredients, admire the musicianship, and relish the sheer majesty the performances breathe (hats off to Steve Cropper, Donald 'Duck' Dunn and the late Al Jackson jr as well). Soooo soulful! (Hey and for Dylan's parody ode and another GB cover version ...)

quite simply one of the most beautiful love songs ever

Wow … "Simply beautiful" ... and here's the original version, off 1972's "I'm Still In Love With You" lp on Hi - as produced by Willie Mitchell of course:
& while we're at it … here's another classic by a soul singer who's more famous for another song, off a 1969 single on Atlantic; the original version of "True love travels by a gravel road" is by Duane Dee (1968) and Elvis also covered it in 1969.
