belgium's dragon & insects

Dragon, from Belgium, released their untitled debut in 1976. It's no masterpiece, but this spaceyish track is rather nice. The lp has recently been reprinted by Golden Pavillion (GP1003LP, 2010-05-30), who've also released the band's so-so 1977 demo recordings as "Kalahen" (GP1009LP, 2011-03-01).

the yellow machine's fading flower

Flower Machine's "Fading Yellow" series continues (beyond volume 10) … It's not clear from the liner notes whose version of "For all that I am" is the original, but it's Soulful Bowlful's, not the Creation's; Stephen Friedland aka Brute Force wrote it with one Paul Kahan. The Open Window's story, or rather Peter Schickele's, is a long and special one; this track is off the "Oh! Calcutta!" soundtrack (1969). More on Victoire Scott here, but Lazy Jack's a mystery. Hey and the Pebbles were from Antwerp in Belgium, got that?

birds that change colour

Fantastic music … housed in a discouraging cover, sadly, as you can hardly read the band's name. Which may cause Koen Kohlbacher's Birds That Change Colour to be filed under "On Recording The Sun (And The Moon)" - the album's title (Munich 2011). For fans of Paul Roland, Ned Collette, Syd Barrett, Donovan, Kevin Ayers, … and delicate pop music tout court. Give it several spins and you'll discover one of the best albums of the year. And to see them live … 2011-11-11 or 2011-11-19 have cool bills …

fly low creature with the atom brain

Whilst we eagerly await the new Creature with the Atom Brain album (check "The birds fly low" for a fine teaser), let's revisit 2009's all too underrated nay mighty "Transylvania" (MR303 on Munich) for "Spinnin' the black hole" - like a perfect cross between Midlake and Sun Dial - or "Darker than a dungeon" with Koen Kohlbacher of Birds that Change Colour - or "Lonely light" with Mark Lanegan & Chris Goss - or "The color of sundown" or "Something is wrong"

four daydreams

A groovy 1969 B side version of "Daydream" by David Mahna MacKay, who'd produced the Wallace Collection's 1968 original … plus Franck Pourcel's take and Claude François' "Rêveries" remake (new lyrics by Jacques Plante, both from the same année érotique, and, finally, the Beta Band sampling it in 2001.

carol with snowy red and a machine or two

Absolutely wanted to play Carol's "Breakdown" for ya - a track I'd already mentioned in my Snowy Red post, as he's backing her on this one. The track is also on the very excellent "A Man & A Machine III" v/a 2cd. The tracks by the Cabs, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and Drinking Electricity are presented here in the compilers' original sequence, just to show how well Stéphane Ritzenthaler and Philippe Pierre-Adolphe can create a musical flow, apart from having impeccable taste in eighties wave and avantgarde … Do check their "A Man & A Machine" series, I urge thee!

2011-10-01 kapotski triple deck release party

Media_httpwwwgentblog_qiihb

Kapotski kinda call to mind a cross between high concept Houquets and improvisation dynamo Monguito. But I haven't yet heard an amazing Kapotski track via the internet. Seeing most of them date from a couple of years back, I'm really looking forward to their new release (buzz buzz). And I can't wait for a Bigband Bigbandski release either ;-)

frieda von ipanema sufferin' from tyfus contour

Jobim & Moraes' "Garota de Ipanema" in a version by Mrs. Miller (1966) by way of tribute to Dennis Tyfus' "Gargles from Ipanema" installation, which you can experience 'neath the platforms of Mechelen's Nekkerspoel train station until 2011-10-30 as part of the Contour 2011 5th Biennial of Moving Image. Whether you know Frieda or not, I urge you to go and see the installation! You can hear a taster of Vom Grill & Remörk's one hour soundtrack here, as two excerpts have been released on an Ültra Eczema 10" (cat. no. UE105). The Anthony Kiendl curated Contour will also bring Lee Ranaldo & Leah Singer to Malines on 2011-09-30, while Chicks on Speed, the late Brion Gysin and Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven / Club Moral are contributing art too. Addendum: a sad ending / premature removal of the installation ...

maddening unity

After "Here Comes The Crazy Man!" (Vogue 1974), Koen De Bruyne (RIP 1977), Patricia Maesen (RIP 1996) and Jean-Pierre Onraedt also played / sang on "Funky Tramway" (Vogue 1975) by Mad Unity, aka legendary library man Janco Nilovic's Brussels project. As reissued by Vadim (cd ànd lp) this Summer (2011) …
