danger ennio : diabolik morricone

Accompanying my "Danger: Diabolik" post … here's four excerpts from Ennio Morricone's soundtrack (1967 / 1968). Hey and did you know that the Beastie Boys … and that Mike Patton really digs

chicago's answer to com truise?

After Com Truise, Zombie Zombie, Principles of Geometry and the like … let's hear it from Chicago's Michael Perkins and his "Mr 666" albumette? Apart from more uptempo tracks à la "Esteban II" (way cool), Mister Mike's music reminds me a tad too often of a sterile Kosmische Logic System rather than of the highly imaginative John Carpenter or any of the aforementioned acts influenced by that director. But I'm sure that'll evolve. In any case: great videos by Mike Broers, if I'm not mistaken.

my bad new roommate's single

The new Roommate video spells "woman trips over cat, hits head, falls into swimming pool, has out of body experience complete with swirling vortex and wraith like demons - music by Roommate, video assembly by Mike Broers who created this mystifying gem out of an '80s made for tv movie and some kind of Atari machine, or something like that." Abysmal eh seminal! Moreover, "synthesizer maestro Michael Perkins and the aforementioned Mike Broers have crafted their own version of the song, juicing it up with snazzy chords and spicy textures" dixit Kent Lambert … Free download of that remix here or listen below. (Do check this other Perkins gem whilst you're on Bandcamp, incidentally.) As for Roommate's own music: free download of "My bad" via the Chicago Mixtape 038 but that's only online for a limited time so hurry, chums, hurry! Also: free download of Roommate's "A night like this" Cure cover via Cokemachineglow's fantasy covers podcast part one; and earlier Guided by Voices cover "Smothered in hugs" still available via the Chicagoist!

2011-10-04 soirée gainsbourg - vous êtes averty

An excerpt from Jean-Christophe Averty's chroma key masterpiece "Melody" (1971, here in its entirety) which will be screened at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Lille (France) on 2011-10-04 alongside other extraits … Dixit Richard Metzger: "what is little known, even to fans of the album, is "Melody", the half hour, shot on videotape visualization of the album, created by Gainsbourg and director Jean-Christophe Averty and starring himself and Jane Birkin. It was included in the career-spanning Gainsbourg 2dvd box set "Serge Gainsbourg: d’autres nouvelles des etoiles" that came out in 2005." Incidentally, the two instrumental versions below are from 2011's Gainsbox … Hey and let's not forget Jean-Claude Vannier's important involvement either!

barney bubbles' alice

"A music video made using rare '60s footage from an Alice in Wonderland inspired film project collaboration by Michel Parry, Barney Bubbles and a bunch of their friends. Alice is played by Rosemary Chester. The footage was originally recorded with the intention of making a whole film inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The film was never completed and the original footage was only recently saved and transferred to dvd by Michel Parry who showed it to his daughter Cassie (Bear). Shortly after, Harry of Bear Driver edited the original footage to fit the song and the film (that has never previously been released in any form) was given new life. Both Michel Parry and Barney Bubbles appear in this footage. The locations are still recognisable as Soho square and Crystal Palace Park, where the monsters are!"

hope hikasu's well

Musiquekraftwerk

Kinda klumsy, I'll admit, how some of us are voicing our distress at the Fukushima tragedy by posting this Kraftwerk song, isn't it … To me, Hikasu's is the most appropriate cover version today. (Meanwhile, I really hope the use of sayonara will stay scarce, even though we may have strong feelings that some government officials and Tepco / Tokyo Electric Power Co. should resign some time soon … Somehow I'm confident they won't hala-kiwi themselves in the plant to make up for their mistakes. I do hope they'll have to answer to the people of Japan for their fatal lack of judgement.) [Tnx OD + bonus.]

ivor shrigley & david cutler

David Shrigley - currently on expo in BelgiuM - has drawn clips for his fellow Scotsman Ivor Cutler, who's influenced him immensely. (These two tracks are off the Oblique Musical Philosopher's lp "Ludo" as produced by Sir Martin - you can find a third track here.) Bonus: more Cutler stuff, three wee Tomlab links and:

happy eleven y'all !

Eleven! "Time zones" is one of thé utterly superior slices of cut ‘n’ paste radio taping montage ever. It's off the Escape From Noise lp (SST 1987) by Negativland, thé masters at the media reappropriation craft. Ten years later, after the break i.e., their Truth in advertisingsingle (Eerie Materials, 1997) would set another standard.
