The "Where Are You From? (Christophe Lemaire And Now-Again Records Present A Series Of Global Psychedelic Rock, Funk And Folk Grooves. 16 Tracks From 1968 Until The Present Day)" v/a cd on Now-Again (NA 5073, 2011) has been compiled by Christophe Lemaire, a Frenchman who has worked for Lacoste (dig their brilliant L!VE! collection) and who has now replaced Jean-Paul Gaultier at Hermès … Great to see gypsy hippie Damon end up in the hands of Paris' beau monde and other filthy rich, too ;-

snowy red box

With "1980-1984 The Ultimate Edition", Onderstroom has just released a magnificent 5lp Snowy Red box featuring the first three albums and two lp's worth of B sides, unreleased versions & demo tracks, including the 7" with Carol. Plus a 24 page booklet (7" format ). "Besides proto versions of "Blood blood blood", "Maud is dead" and "Deep desire", the main discovery is the 22 minutes version of “The wild boys”: an electronic trip you do not want to end!" I.M. Micky Mike aka Marcel Thiel, electronic wave pioneer - shockingly, he's not even mentioned here. Still:

Ramases

For those of you - Minestrone fans or other - who couldn't lay hands on any of the vinyl reprints on Mexican Summer or Tapestry: another expensive label - Akarma - has picked up on "Space Hymns" too. This lp by Ramases (1971, Vertigo) had already been reissued on cd by Repertoire. In "Quasar one", the album features a remake of "Crazy one", originally a 7" single release from 1968 recorded with Selket.

michael chapman's fully qualified ghosts

The bitter wailings of the master of regret: Michael Chapman … Since discovering Chapman's music around 1986, I've never taken those people seriously who find Leonard Cohen's music depressing. (Cohen has tremendous wit, actually.) Michael Chapman (do not confuse him with Family's Roger Chapman) has worked with Ronson, Dunbar, Buckmaster … and has recorded his best work for Harvest. After reissues by BGO, C5, Repertoire and See for Miles, the San Francisco label Light in the Attic is the latest to rerelease him. They're starting with his second album "Fully Qualified Survivor" (1970). Hopefully, "Rainmaker" (1969), "Window" (1971) and "Wrecked Again" (1971) will follow, and "Millstone Grit" (Deram 1973), "Deal Gone Down" (Deram 1974) and some of his lesser known later work (on Decca and beyond) as well. (Meanwhile, Chapman has released twenty-six solo guitar versions of tunes spanning his entire career via the "Trainsong: Guitar Compositions 1967-2010" 2cd on Tompkins Square - whose site fails to state the cat. no. or barcode of their release, sadly.)

george smits

Toet Toet Zbolk Zbolk ... With "Isomopolis. ICC" (Ultra Eczema cat. no. UE89, 2011-02), Antwerp dynamo Dennis Tyfus has just released his first George Smits lp. And according to the hardest working man in the business of Belgium's underground heritage, a.o., there's more to come from Smits' vaults. Earlier on, Lowlands had released "Zbolk Night Radio" (1995 cat. no. AUDIO 002) and "Toet" (2001, AUDIO 012) on cd via its Audioview imprint. "Isomopolis. ICC" is a beautifully packaged and well documented picture disc limited to 200 copies. It features three compositions in three parts by Ferre Grignard's former guitar (etc) player recorded at the Antwerp ICC in 1981. (Highly recommended for fans of "Mzui" and Michael O'Shea!) The amazing documentary above was made by Karel Schoetens for the BRT in 1984; the interview was conducted by Wim Van Mulders. Just watch this for the frères Bachet fragment alone!
