toussaint & sehorn' sansu soul farm
Zilla Mayes! One of the best soul singles ever, imho. I originally discovered her on the "How To Pick A Winner" v/a lp (Charly R&B cat. no. CRB 1124, 1986), the sequel to "Sehorn's Soul Farm" v/a lp (CRB 1032, 1982). Part of a series which also included "Southern Soul Belles" (CRB 1035), "S.S.S. Soul Survey" (CRB 1034) and "Stan's Soul Shop" (CRB 1033), these two lp's dedicated specifically to the variety of New Orleans labels run by Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint (aka Naomi Neville) are two of Charly's best vinyl comps ever! And now they're on the budget (but classy) v/a 2cd "Sehorn's Soul Farm 50 New Orleans Soul Classics" alongside eighteen extra tracks (SNAD661CD, 2010). We're hoping Charly's groundbreaking duet of "Some Rare Grooves" v/a lps, viz. "Got To Get Your Own" (CRM 2032 [sic], 1987) and "The Message" (CRB 1188, 1988) will get the exact same treatment from the revived Charly label! And as Jeff Hannusch wrote: a second offering of Toussaint (or other) productions from the catalogues of the DeeSu, Sansu, Tou-Sea and White Cliffs labels (all of which were owned at least in part by the late Mr. Sehorn) would be very welcome too! (One minor flaw on the 2010 v/a 2cd: the intro of "I love you still" has a false start, which is why I've featured the original lp version. A 45 version with different opening vocals also exists.)
